Cards

Creating this game has been a process of discovery. For now, that journey has led to the 43 gifts you'll find in this deck — a collection that I feel is balanced, meaningful, and ready to be shared.

Every card was chosen with one goal in mind: to feel truly special to receive and have a strong "wow!" factor. To achieve that I have followed a few guiding principles for what to include, and what to leave out:
  • Gifts You Can See. A gift had to be something you could compliment someone on with a real-life story. Introspection for example, is a wonderful trait, but it's hard to tell an anecdote about it. The gifts in this deck are based on observable actions.
  • Clear and Distinct. Some gifts, like Determination (included), Perseverance (excluded) and Grit (excluded) can be hard to tell apart in a gameplay setting. To keep things clear, I only included gifts that are distinct from each other.
  • Suited for Any Setting. Some great gifts are most relevant in specific contexts, like Thoroughness at work. The gifts in this deck were chosen for their universality, making them meaningful for a family dinner, a game night with friends, and everything in between.
  • Inner Character Over Outer Appearance. The deck focuses exclusively on who you are, not what you look like. You won't find cards for Beauty or Style here. The game is about celebrating the gifts of character.
I hope this selection makes the game a joy to play for everyone.

How to Play

Goal: To share and connect by celebrating each other's strengths.
Players: 2-5 is optimal, but more can work (see Variants).
Duration: 10-30 minutes, depending on player count.

This is the classic game of the deck. It’s a simple, powerful way to practice giving and receiving compliments, sparking connection and appreciation among friends, family, or partners.

How To Play: The Basics

  1. 1. CHOOSE THREE CARDS Shuffle the deck and spread the cards out. Each player chooses three cards and places them face down in front of them.
  2. 2. START A TURN Choose someone to be the first Active Player. The Active Player turns their three cards face-up for everyone to see and reads each "Gift" aloud.
  3. 3. CHOOSE SECRETLY Now, everyone (including the Active Player) secretly decides which of the three cards best describes the Active Player today. Keep your choice to yourself for now!
  4. 4. REVEAL TOGETHER To get ready for the reveal, number the cards 1, 2, and 3. When everyone has chosen, the Active Player counts down, "Three... two... one!" On "one," everyone simultaneously shows their choice using their fingers (one finger for card 1, two for card 2, etc).
  5. 5. TELL THE STORIES This is the most important step. Taking turns, each person explains why they chose their card, sharing a brief story or observation about the Active Player. We suggest doing this "popcorn style"—letting people share when they feel ready. The Active Player always shares their story last.
How to Give a Great Compliment
    • Be Specific: Give real examples of what the person does or says. Anecdotes are golden!
    • Share the Impact: Explain how their actions affected you or others. "When you did X, it made me feel Y."
    • Speak from the Heart: Be yourself. Honest, simple words are the most powerful.

  6. 6. START THE NEXT TURN Once everyone has shared, set the three used cards aside. "Whoever feels the call" becomes the new Active Player, and you repeat the process from step 2.
  7. FINISHING THE GAME The game typically ends after every player has had a turn as the Active Player. If time and enthusiasm allow, feel free to play another full round! Just be sure to use fresh cards from the deck.

Tips for a Wonderful Game

  • On Receiving Compliments When it's your turn to be the Active Player, your only job is to listen and receive. Avoid protesting or deflecting. Take a breath, make eye contact, smile, and when they are done, simply say "Thank you." You are worth it.
  • On Complimenting Yourself Explaining why you chose a card for yourself can feel tricky! Embrace it. This is your moment to acknowledge your own strength. Think of it as sharing a moment you're proud of — it's important and everyone is cheering for you.

Game Variants

  • Larger Groups (6+ Players) To keep the game moving, you can limit who tells a story in Step 5. For example, perhaps only the two players sitting next to the Active Player share their stories. The Active Player, however, always gets to share their story, and always goes last.
  • The "Discard One" Rule (For More Control) At the start of the game, each player chooses four cards instead of three. Everyone looks at their hand and secretly discards the one card they like the least, leaving them with three. This gives players more control over their turn, but can sometimes prevent them from hearing about a strength they don't see in themselves!
